How does one review a classic? A beginning might be the recalling of one's career-long association with it. My introduction to the book was in 1960 through Harry Welsh's 4th year course in physical optics at the University of Toronto. He lavishly praised the first edition of Principles of Optics which had just appeared. It was obvious to all that this was a book from which to study in order to do well in his course. The first edition was based on the optics material in Max Born's treatise Optik which had been published in 1933. It also included full discussions of developments in the intervening quarter of a century and it immediately outclassed any other text available in the English language on the subject of optics. In 1970 I joined the faculty of the University of Manitoba and purchased my own copy of the book, then in its 4th edition. Don Douglas had been teaching a senior course in optics at Manitoba for decades. Dissatisfied with what was available as texts, Don had learned German, translated large sections of Optik and through the 1950s distributed mimeographed copies of these notes to his students. He too was not reticent to tell of his joy when Principles of Optics appeared. Another colleague borrowed my newly-purchased copy and was slow to return it. When I asked for it, he argued that as a theorist he had a greater need for the book than I, an experimentalist, did. Clearly this is a book with a following, but why do I consider it a classic?
The major reason is the thoroughness and attention to detail given to the mathematical aspects of the subject, whether the topic is formal theory or the physics behind the operation of an optical instrument. In the preface to the first edition, the authors describe the content as optical phenomena describable in terms of Maxwell's phenomenological theory, including all situations in which the atomistic structure of matter plays no decisive part. Within the book one can find discussions and derivations related to fundamental topics difficult to locate elsewhere; the Ewald extinction theorem, the careful treatment of the complex representation of real polychromatic fields, rigorous diffraction theory, and interference and diffraction with partially coherent light spring to mind. Then, of course, there are those glorious appendices, explaining mathematical techniques central to optical physics: calculus of variations, asymptotic approximations to integrals, Dirac delta function, Zermke polynormals, to name a few. While the book does not have the abundance of glitzy photographs found in undergraduate texts, there are a surprisingly large number of well reproduced photographs of the results of high quality experiments.
For the present (7th) edition, Professor Wolf has produced the first thoroughly revised and expanded version of the original book. The basic structure and contents remain unaltered and nothing from earlier editions appears to be omitted. An entire chapter has been added on the scattering of light by inhomogeneous media. Topics treated there include the first Born approximation, scattering from periodic potentials, multiple scattering, the Rytov expansion and the optical cross-section theorem. Wolf, himself, states that such theory was established long ago for quantum mechanical potential scattering but has only recently been developed in connection with optics. This material, together with, say, that from the chapter on scattering in Electrodynamics of Continuous Media by Landau and Lifshitz provides a comprehensive overview of the phenomenon.

Its failing would be lack of problems and worked examples, both of which would have to supplied by the instructor.
Students of the electromagnetic field have been particularly favoured in recent years with the publication of three fine monographs. Classical Electrodynamics (Schwinger, DeRaad, Milton, and Tsui) is a rendering of the lecture notes of Julian Schwinger with his unique pedagogical style and physical insights. Optical Coherence and Quantum Optics (Mandel and Wolf) is another collaborative effort of Professor Wolf, this time with his U. of Rochester colleague. The extended version of Principles of Optics is the third. All three are, or have the potential to be, physics classics. The younger generation, steeped in the marvels of quantum optics, might be inclined to ignore classical optics. However, I would suggest that just as one cannot understand Jung without having read Freud or appreciate Hemingway without having read Dickens, one cannot fully master the material found in Mandel and Wolf without familiarity with that of Born and Wolf.
